"How to remember Chinese characters.
There are many Chinese characters one needs to remember to get by. One may wonder how can anyone remember so many of them!
A short answer is that if one does it in a wrong way, it can be very difficult to remember them. So what is the right way?
Firstly, remember that pinyin is not a language. Whenever and wherever you can, mark a new character with another character that shares the same sound. At the same time, make up a story to link the two by their sound. For instance, the character for egg is 蛋 and the character for dawn is 旦. The two characters share the same sound. (dan4)
You may remember them as this: when the Sun rises above horizon, which is the character 旦, it looks like an egg yolk 蛋. In this way you remember two of them. Secondly, always remember characters in a context. Modern Chinese uses word combinations instead of single characters. Remember a word combination is easier than remember a single character. For example, the character 折 can have many meanings and it is hard to remember them all only by studying the character alone. So we remember it in word combinations. 折磨, torture, literally means break and grind. 折本, losing money in business, literally means breaking the capital. 挫折, frustration and setback, literally means obstacles and break. The word combinations make the memorizing easier.
Thirdly, try to understand the origin of the character. In the case of 折, the left part of the character used to be 木 that is a tree, and the right part is 斧 that is an axe. The character originally means to chop a tree with an axe. Later the tree part became a hand yet the basic meaning still remains. If you can understand a character in this way, the in depth knowledge of Chinese will make the learning process more enjoyable. "

"Create either a concept map or a table to analyze parts of characters or group similar characters together. The key is to make the clusters meaningful. Some ideas for creating clusters include:
-words that fit into the same pattern
-characters sharing the same radical
-characters sharing the same phonetic component (similar pronunciation)
-characters sharing any other component
-words or characters with a shared idea (such as "places," "colors," "activities involved in studying," "polite language," etc.)
Create a top-down hierarchical chart breaking a single character into smaller, meaningful components.
Create a mnemonic device to remember the parts of a character. It could be a picture suggested by the character's strokes (
高 looks like a tall man wearing a hat, standing above the crowd), or a story connecting the components (鐵 iron is a metal, the earth-mouth king (king of the mine) used to make spears).
