Открыл для себя Кормака Маккарти, прочитав «Кровавый меридиан» (Blood Meridian by Cormack MacCarthy).
Роман о «диком Западе», хотя он не похож ни на один вестерн. Он не оставляет камня на камне от мифа о «благородных» ковбоях, об американском Фронтире, о том, как Америка завоевывала себе «жизненное пространство». Сначала за счет индейцев, потом за счет мексиканцев. В центре повествования – судьба Парня (the kid), убежавшего из дома и, в конце концов, примкнувшего к отряду наемников капитана Глэнтона, которые уничтожали индейцев и продавали их скальпы мексиканским губернаторам.
Масштаб романа раскрывается постепенно. Чтение нелегкое, насыщен каждый абзац. Не легко читать и потому, что в романе множество сцен насилия и убийств. Но книга завораживает, хотя и не дает никаких ответов, предоставляя читателю искать ответы самому.
Написанный в 1985 году, «Кровавый меридиан» признан одной из трех лучших произведений американской литературы за последние 25 лет. Фильм, который собирался снимать по мотивам романа известный режиссер Ридли Скотт, должен выйти в будущем году.
