The Korea Foundation Volunteer Network is planning a kimchi-making experience as its November cultural event on Nov. 12 at 12:00 p.m. at the Ui-dong Won Buddhism Youth facilities. KF volunteers will serve as guides and instructors for this interesting cultural event, which will give foreigners an opportunity to learn more about Korean traditional culture. Koreans used to prepare for the long Korean winters by making kimchi in a practice called gimjang 김장. While making kimchi, other food like pork was prepared to savor with the great taste of the freshly made kimchi. For those who do not eat meat, the event will provide kalguksu 칼국수 noodles. Participants can also take home the kimchi they made, if they wish.
To participate, send an email, including your name and cell phone number, to KF volunteer Ms. Kim Young-sook (frederika_7@hotmail.com) by Nov. 9. The participation fee is 10,000 won (만 원). Ansan Aviation Show to Take to the Skies in May

The annual G-Global Aviation in Ansan air show kicks off for a five-day run on May 5. Last year's show attracted some 400,000 spectators, making it the largest aviation exhibition in Asia.

This year visitors will have the opportunity to take aircraft rides, view a variety of exhibitions and see over 70 different aircraft up close.

Tickets are on sale now, priced at W3,000 (US$1=W1,124) for adults (18 to 64 years of age) and W2,000 for children and teens (5 to 17).

Tickets can also be purchased online at a 25 percent discount from the Gyeonggi Tourism Organization website (http://www.gto.or.kr) or Ticketlink (http://www.ticketlink.co.kr) until May 4.

"Last year on Children's Day visitors had to wait for two hours at the gate to get their tickets," a Gyeonggi Provincial Government official said. "This year we also started offering online ticket sales in order to minimize inconvenience."

Buying tickets at the site will cost slightly more, at W4,000 for adults and W2,500 for children and teenagers. Holders of alien registration cards can enter free of charge.

Общая информация

Фестиваль лотосовых фонарей, проходящий в Сеуле ежегодно, имеет очень глубокие корни. Существовавшая в Корее с давних пор традиция изготовления и зажжения фонарей в честь дня рождения Будды остается актуальной и сегодня. Каждый год весной в центральной части Сеула в районе Чонно собираются тысячи туристов, желающих насладиться одним из самых ярких и красивых традиционных фестивалей, проводящихся в Корее. Фестиваль лотосовых фонарей приурочен к Дню рождения Будды (8 апреля по лунному календарю), который обычно выпадает на один из майских дней, и является прекрасной возможностью познакомиться поближе с традиционной буддийской культурой.
Фестиваль начинается с церемонии зажжения фонарей на площади перед зданием Сеульской мэрии, а главным мероприятием фестиваля можно по праву назвать парад фонарей, который проходит через всю центральную часть Сеула. Кроме того, программа фестиваля включает множество других интересных мероприятий и праздничных церемоний, в числе которых изготовление лотосовых фонарей, дегустация храмовой пищи, торжественная церемония закрытия фестиваля и др. Кроме того, в буддийском храме Понынса в районе Самсон-дон пройдет "Выставка традиционных фонарей", и в других буддийских храмах по всей стране пройдут праздничные церемонии зажжения фонарей.
Этот фестиваль привлекает внимание множества иностранных туристов, которым интересны не только буддийская культура, но и возможность принять участие в различных программах и мероприятиях, в особенности в занятиях по изготовлению традиционных лотосовых фонарей, а также в занятиях по буддийской живописи.
