2007--2008 Fellowship Opportunities
The Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies at the United States
Holocaust
Memorial Museum is now accepting applications for the 2007--2008
Visiting
Scholar Program. The deadline for applications is November 27, 2006.
Please share this opportunity with your colleagues and students.
The Center awards fellowships to support significant research and
writing
about the Holocaust. Awards are granted on a competitive basis. The
Center welcomes proposals from scholars in all relevant academic
disciplines,including history, political science, literature, Jewish
studies,
philosophy, religion, psychology, comparative genocide studies, law,
and
others.
Fellowships are awarded to candidates working on their dissertations
(ABD), postdoctoral researchers, and senior scholars. Applicants must
be
affiliated with an academic and/or research institution. Immediate
post-docs and faculty between appointments will also
be considered.
The specific fellowship and the length of the award are at the Center's
discretion. Individual awards generally range up to nine months of
residency; a minimum of three consecutive months is required.
Fellowships
of five months or longer have proven most effective. Stipends range up
to
$3,000 per month. Residents of the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area
receive a modified stipend and term of residency.
The postmark deadline for all fellowship applications is November 27,
2006.
Decisions will be announced by early April 2007. Fellowships may start
as
early as June 2007 and must be completed no later than September 2008.
All applications must be in English and consist of:
- A completed application form
- A project proposal not to exceed five single-spaced pages (see
application form for guidelines)
- A curriculum vitae
- Three letters of recommendation that speak to the significance of
the
proposed project and the applicant's ability to carry it out, to be
sent
directly to the Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies (see application

recently received the Ph.D. to spend a specified term in residence at
the
Institute (usually a semester or an academic year) without any
obligations other than the revision of their dissertation
for publication in book form.
Nevertheless, fellows are encouraged to share their work by giving a
public presentation, and to participate in lectures and other events.
Fellows may use the Harriman Resource Center and the Columbia
Libraries. Although space is limited, the Institute tries
to provide offices or at
least desk space for all postdoctoral fellows.
The primary criterion for such fellowships is excellence. Evidence of
the
dissertation's potential to make a significant contribution to Russian,
Soviet or post-Soviet studies weighs most in the Fellowship Committee's
selection of fellows. Postdoctoral fellows must defend their
dissertations by June 1 and deposit them before the start of the
academic year in early September in order to receive
their fellowships. There is no set number of fellowships.
To apply, candidates should send the following materials to the
Harriman
Institute Fellowship Committee by January 2 (fellowships begin the
following September):

* A substantial portion of the dissertation;
* Three letters of recommendation;
* A research plan outlining how their time will be spent at the
Institute.

The University of Chicago Library announces a program of short-term
research fellowships for 2007-2008. Any visiting researcher residing
more
than 100 miles from Chicago whose project would be advanced by on-site
consultation of materials in the Special Collections Research Center is
eligible.
Awards will be made based on an evaluation of the research proposal and
the
applicant's ability to complete it successfully. Priority will be given
to
projects that cannot be conducted without on-site access to the
original
materials and where University of Chicago collections are central to
the
research. Up to $3,000 of support will be awarded to help cover
projected
travel, living and research expenses. Applications from women,
minorities,
and persons with disabilities are encouraged.
The deadline for applications is February 15, 2007. Notice of awards
will
be made by April 2, 2007, for use between July 1, 2007, and June 30,
2008.

Stanford University invites applications for the Stanford Humanities
Fellows Program, a postdoctoral fellowship designed to give the best
recent Ph.D. recipients in the humanities a unique
opportunity to develop as scholars and teachers. Up to six two-year
fellowships will be awarded in the following fields:

Italian; German Studies; Linguistics; Asian

From the Brain to Human Culture: Intersections
between the Humanities and Neuroscience
An interdisciplinary conference sponsored by the
Comparative Humanities Program at Bucknell University to be held at
Bucknell University

Confirmed Plenary Speakers:
Papers and/or panels are solicited for an interdisciplinary conference
examining the intersections between recent work
in the
humanities and neurosciences. In the past decade, the various branches
of neuroscience (as well as linguistics,
sociobiology and other fields) have
begun to take up the ethical, artistic and behavioral questions that
were previously thought to be the province of
scholars in the humanities
and to challenge the centrality of learned human behavior in these and
other areas. Scholars such as Simon Baron-Cohen, Marc Hauser, and
Steven
Pinker (among many others) have begun to provide
scientific accounts of ethical phenomena and neuroscientific research
has coined new subdisciplinary fields such as
neuroethics, and neuroaesthetics. Scholars in the humanities, in
their turn, have begun to produce
critical-philosophical accounts of the claims of
these scholars and new work on subjects such extended consciousness,
artificial intelligence, robotics, and the effects
of digital culture on
human subjectivity and cultural production. The purpose of this
conference will be to explore the status of this
important debate at the present time
Among the possible themes for papers and panels are:
- can new disciplines like "neuroethics" work alongside traditional
humanistic modes of enquiry or is conflict between
the two inevitable?
- what have the humanities done to respond to
these new developments in the sciences?
- what new configurations of the relationship between the sciences
and the humanities could be made possible by this new work?
- how are questions of culture (human activity in
the world) being related to the activities of the
mind and brain in new and productive ways? And vice versa?
- how does neuroscientific study affect the way
we understand the reception of books, films, and digital media?
- how are rationality and emotion seen as
part of human decision making process by humanists and neuroscientists?
- how has recent research in evolutionary biology
and psychology affected our perceptions of cultural productions?

Social Justice: Ideal Theory, Non-ideal Circumstances

This workshop welcomes papers that consider how ideal theory may most
fruitfully be brought to bear on real-world problems of social justice.
Papers may operate at a theoretical level, analysing the variety of
things that might be meant by 'ideal' and 'non-ideal' theorising, and
exploring the various ways in which political philosophical work on
social justice connects with political action - whether by individuals
or by polities as a whole. Or they may proceed more concretely, by
exploring a particular policy issue and considering how the various
brands of ideal theory on offer address (or fail to address) it. We
particularly welcome papers that use case studies to yield clearer
understanding of the ideal/non-ideal distinction.
All participants are expected to present a paper and to attend all
sessions of the workshop. Applications should include a short summary
of
the proposed paper, an explanation as to how this will fit into the
theme, and a short CV. We expect to accept about 20 applications, and
we
aim to include a mixture of advanced students, newer members of the
profession, and well-established researchers. Prospective participants
are welcome to get in touch with one of the directors in advance of

Call for Papers: Vagantes Graduate Medieval Conference
Loyola University Chicago, March 1-4, 2007
Vagantes is an annual, traveling conference for graduate students
studying any aspect of the Middle Ages. The conference was conceived
with several goals in mind, including the
fostering of a sense of community among
graduate medievalists, providing exposure to an interdisciplinary
forum,
and showcasing the resources of the host institution - all within a
student
budget.
The sixth conference will be hosted by the medievalists of Loyola
University Chicago from March 1-4, 2007. This year's featured speakers
will be Barbara Rosenwein, from Loyola
University Chicago, and Richard Firth Green, from the Ohio State
University.
Abstracts for twenty-minute papers are welcome from graduate students
on
any topic dealing with the Middle Ages, including areas outside the
Latin
West.
Papers should strive for significance to a broad medievalist audience.

The turn to new theories and practices of the archive in critical
theory, cultural studies, queer theory, philosophy, sociology and
associated disciplines has had important repercussions for scholars
working on histories and philosophies of the body. This international
conference will examine the impact of innovative recent work on
archives
and archival practice for sexuality studies, gender studies and
queer/GLBT studies. The conference aims to interrogate how knowledge
about the body is collected and held, as well as how it is produced.
Drawing together scholars from a broad range of inter-disciplinary
fields, it will highlight scholarship about bodies, genders and
sexuality that is empirically grounded, document based, historically
inflected, theoretically informed and self-conscious of its
relationship
to archival practice.
By calling attention to the relationship between "knowledge of bodies"
and "bodies of knowledge," the conference also intends to showcase
sexuality-related work in the archives, library and information
sciences
fields. We are particularly interested in work that examines sexual
knowledges retrieved from state archives; community-based archives that
preserve forms of sexual knowledge not valued by the state;
distribution
of and access to sexual knowledge on the Internet and World-Wide Web;
and work that understands both body and mind as metaphorical "archives"
that hold knowledge of sexuality.
We invite proposals for papers of 20-25 minutes (10-12 pages) in length
addressing these or related issues. Possible topics include:

Санкт-Петербургского
государственного университета состоится четвертая ежегодная научная
конференция, посвященная выдающемуся отечественного востоковеду и
религиоведу профессору Евгению Алексеевичу Торчинову (1956 - 2003).
Предполагаемая тематика докладов:

- рецепция восточных культур в странах Запада и в России
- рациональность и мистицизм в культурах Востока
- художественная культура и литература Востока
- новые религиозные движения восточного происхождения

экземпляр сборника бесплатно.
