"Between it [Canton] and the Rampart, or Great Wall of Gog and Magog, there is a space of sixty days' journey as I was told. This territory is occupied by wandering tribes of heathen, who eat such people as they can catch, and for this reason no one enters their country or attempts to travel there. I saw nobody in this city who had been to the Great Wall, or who knew anybody who had been there."
«This wall or Chanfacau (so they call it, that is, strong resistance) runneth with an equal course till it encounters with hills, which are all... made so that it is stronger than the wall itself, the wall being only in the spaces twixt hill and hill, the hills themselves making up the rest.»
"At every one of those five entrances the King of China hath one fort and the Tartar another: in every of the China forts there are seven thousand men, six thousand foot and one thousand horse, in continual pay; most of them strangers, Mogors, Champaas, Pancrus, Coracones, and Gizares of Persia, the Chinese being but mean soldiers. In all the space of this wall are three hundred and twenty regiments, each of five hundred men (in all one hundred and sixty thousand), besides ministers, commanders, and their retinue...."
«At the boundary of the kingdom of China, where it borders on the Tartars, there is a wall of wondrous strength, of a month's journey in extent, where the king keeps a great military force in the bulwarks. Where this wall comes upon mountains, they cut them in such a manner that they remain and serve as a wall; for the Tartars are very brave and skilful in war. At the time we were prisoners, they broke through a part of the wall and entered into the territory for a month and a half's journey; but as the king prepared great armies of men provided with artful contrivances (in which the Chinese are very crafty), he kept back the Tartars, who fight on horseback. As their horses had become weak and were dying of hunger, one of the Chinese officers commanded a large quantity of peas to be placed in the fields, and thus it was that the horses (being so hungry as they were) set themselves to eat against the will of their masters; and in this manner the army of the king of China put them in disorder and turned to drive them out. And now a strict watch is kept on the wall»
Как видим, стена не только легко проходилась, но и не больно охранялась («now a strict watch is kept…»).
«It runneth along the borders of three northerly provinces, Xiensi, Xansi, and Paquin, and is said to contain almost three hundred leagues in length, and in such sort to be built, that it hindereth not the courses and streams of any rivers, their channels being overthwarted and fortified with wonderful bridges and other defenses. Yet it is not unlikely, that the said wall is built in such sort, that only low and easy passages be therewith stopped and environed; but the mountains running between those low passages are, by their own natural strength, and inaccessible height, a sufficient fortification against the enemy.»
«The Chinese have an hundred leagues (others saying there are more) of a Wall between them and the [Tartars], where are continually garrisons of men for the defense of the entries of the Tartarians. It may be believed that this Wall is not continued, but that some mountains or hills are intermixed between; for a lord of Persia affirmed to me, that the like works were in some parts of Persia, with intermixing some hills and mountains.»
The Historie of the great and mightie kingdome of China and the situation thereof , опубликованном в 1585 году:
«There is in this kingdom a defense or wall that is five hundred leagues long, and beginning at the city Ochyou [Ho-chow in Shensi], which is upon the high mountains, and runneth from west unto east. The king of that country which made it was called Tzintzon, and it was for his defense against the Tartaries, with whom he had wars; so that the wall doth shut up the frontier of Tartaria. But you must understand that four hundred leagues of the said wall is natural of itself, for that they be high and mighty rocks, very nigh together: but in the other hundred leagues is comprehended the spaces or distance betwixt the rocks, the which he caused to be made by men's hands of very strong work of stone, and is of seven fathom broad at the foot of it, and seven fathom high.»
«To the north the country is defended against hostile Tartar raids by precipitious hills, which are joined into an unbroken line of defense with a tremendous wall four hundred and five miles long. To the northwest it is flanked by a great desert of many days' march, which either deters an advancing army from attacking the Chinese border or becomes the burial place of those who attempt the attack.»
«Along the northern border of Shansi the Wall is made of clay, without battlements, and is only about five feet high. West of Shansi it is a narrow mud rampart, sometimes even only a sand ridge. It is in better repair between Suchow and Kia-yü-kuan, in Kansu. Thence to Hsining, on the Tibetan border, the mountains serve as a rampart, with a moat along their crests.»
