I think that Turgenev did not exaggerate his feeling. Just the same, excellent calligraphic scripts ( especially those created by excellent poets )can always arouse very complicated emotions from within - the precondition is that, you have been enwrapped by some peculiar taste which, since time immemorial, never ceases trying to form a combination of "intensive study" and "unadorned savageness".

Since Chinese hieroglyphs are based on kinds of shapes around us, it may be easier to understand the "beauty" of calligraphy when looking at traditional Chinese paintings in which organized characters played an very important role as to express some "poetic" feeling.

You can see "篆书" and "行书" in this one:

Such calligraphic works are not created only by Chinese. Please see some postcards with pictures and text written by Van Gogh. Van Gogh "wrote" the pictures in a way as same as how he wrote the words.

To "write" paintings, that means, to describe shapes in a "calligraphic" way - a very typical characteristic of traditional Chines painting, also a very high standard, as you can imagine.

On the other hand, many Chinese paintings can be directly understood as calligraphy.

This Chinese edition was published in 1987, and the book may be written before China's cultural revolution.

A very valuable book, indeed. Maybe you could find the Russian edition.
