WITH a historic handshake and an explosion of photographers' flashes, Singapore and Malaysia yesterday marked a happy end to their protracted and often bitter water dispute.
The key points agreed to by the two sides: Singapore will pay more for Malaysia's water, but will be guaranteed continued supply after 2061.
Though the landmark deal has yet to be sealed in black and white, the broad smiles were a clear indication of the two sides' relief at reaching the accord.
'It tastes sweet after so many years of wrangling,' said a Singapore official after both sides emerged from the meeting room in Pan Pacific Hotel here.
Echoed a Malaysian official: 'Malaysia is happy with the deal, and I think Singapore is too. It's a win-win deal.'
Malaysia wins the right to charge Singapore more for the raw water supplied under two pacts signed in 1961 and 1962.
Singapore in return gains an agreement from Malaysia to keep the pipes open for another 100 years after the second agreement expires in 2061.
It will also be able to charge more for the treated water sold back to Malaysia.
Sources said that yesterday's deal hinged on the two sides agreeing at the 11th hour on the sticking points of the price for current and future water.
These details on price were not disclosed to the media.
The breakthrough in this round of talks was made possible only after Malaysia agreed just before the meeting to discuss future supply of water with the price review of current water.
Singapore has maintained it is legally not obliged to pay more for water it is getting now, and will do so only if a new pact for post-2061 is inked.
The accord follows five years of arduous talks that sought to resolve a host of long-standing bilateral issues, of which water is among the thorniest.
