«Оfficial estimates indicate that Latin America alone produced about 150,000 tons of silver between 1500 and 1800.»
(Barrett, Ward. 1990 . World Bullion Flows, 1450-1800. In The Rise of Merchant Empires: Long-Distance Trade in the Early Modern World, 1350-1750, ed. James D. Tracy, pp. 224-54. Cambridge.
Причем это количество «exceeding 80% of the entire world production over that time span».
(Cross, Harry E. 1983 . South American Bullion Production and Export, 1550-1750. In Precious Metals in the Later Medieval and Early Modern Worlds, ed. J. E Richards, pp. 397-424. Durham,
В 17 в. «Fifty tons of silver was also the amount that was shipped through the entire Baltic trade (the Russian and Polish-Lithuanian markets)».
(Attman, Artur. 1986 . American Bullion in the European World Trade, 1600-1800. Göteborg, 81.)
«Silver was coined in this period in most countries, the standard coin being derived from the silver penny of Charlemagne (called also deniers, pfennigs, etc.). This penny originally had about as much silver in it as a dime, but the greed of the rulers and the shortage of silver led to the continued coinage of pennies or deniers with more copper and less silver in them, until by the midthirteenth century most of them were black (copper) instead of white (silver). Though money was used in many transactions in these centuries, barter was even more common. The coinage was suitable only for small retail trade, and coins adapted to large-scale business were not available. It was during this period that the interest in alchemy was reawakened.»
(Economic History of Europe by Shepard Bancroft Clough, Charles Woolsey Cole; Heath, 1952,
И дальше, объясняя факт крайнего увлечения некоторыми аспектами алхимии «the fact that the scarcity of precious metals created a real hunger for them in Europe. So great was the shortage of money that down to the thirteenth century a man who had a surplus income from land, rents, or taxes had few ways in which he could save it. Usually he ate it up, or used it to maintain a retinue of servants or to build himself a better house. As for the methods of business, until the twelfth and thirteenth centuries they were extremely simple. Most trade was local. Much of it was barter. What interregional or international trade existed was limited in quantity and consisted in the direct exchange of goods for goods, money for goods, or goods for money.»
В Трансильвании и Карпатах, и наконец самые большие в Богемии в 15 в - «From 1300 to about 1450 the production of gold and silver in Europe decreased somewhat and the resulting shortage of money was intensified by the increased flow to the East as the crusading movement was checked and the Turks extended their control in the Levant. The shortage led to renewed difficulties and debasement of the coinage.»
