WHO Lifts Travel Warning for Hong Kong, Guangdong Province
2003-05-23 04:55 (New York)
Geneva, May 23 (Bloomberg) — The World Health Organization
has lifted its advice that travelers should avoid Hong Kong and
Guangdong Province, in place since April 2, now that the number of
victims of the respiratory disease SARS has declined.
``We have removed our recommendation to postpone all non-
essential travel to Hong Kong and Guangdong,'' said Dick Thompson,
spokesman for WHO in Geneva, in a telephone interview. ``There
have been fewer than five cases per day and there are less than 60
people who could actively expose others.''
Cumulative infections in the city are 1,724 with 260 deaths
said Liu Shao-haei, a senior executive manager at the Hospital
Authority. A total of eight people were discharged from hospitals
in the past day, bringing recoveries to 1,255.
Hong Kong reported three new cases yesterday, one on
Wednesday and four on Tuesday. One of today's newly infected
patients is a doctor at Prince of Wales Hospital, where the city's
SARS outbreak started in March.
